HUG THERAPY
GETTING TO KNOW OURSELVES THROUGH EACH OTHER
WHAT IS HUG THERAPY
The idea behind this 'therapy' is to release inhibitions, fears, and blockages. It's about knowing that we are not alone, learning to trust, getting closer to another being, becoming aware of oneself and one's dimensions through an extremely simple yet powerful bodily technique. It's about overcoming the fear of knowing who we are in this plane.
The technique can be performed with various variations and additions, in which the guide can provide instructions, suggestions, and explorations that are added spontaneously to those who are practicing it. Hug Therapy can be done with two or more people, even with a large group. It depends on the creativity of the guide and the 'reading' he or she makes of the group they intend to work with.
It's worth noting that it's ideal as a precursor activity to Tantric massages or other practices that involve bodily expression and nudity.
Building Trust
To work on bodily practices, it is necessary to establish a bond of trust between the guide and the practitioner. Therefore, prior processes are carried out to create that atmosphere, as mentioned here.
The person is invited to stand with their back turned, fully clothed. It's always requested to go through the entire process with eyes closed at all times. This provides the security of not being intruded upon by looks we may not be ready for and could be bothersome. It also prevents distractions from visual stimuli in the surroundings, which can reduce our perception through other senses. An eye mask or other covering can be used to assist with this.
Both individuals position themselves at a distance of approximately 1 meter from each other. The guide instructs each person to remove one article of clothing at a time, without turning around, and place them to the side. After both have removed all their clothing, they both sit with their backs to each other. A guided meditation can be conducted at this point.
Then the person is invited to stand up and get dressed again. After this, both are asked to face each other and open their eyes. They meet again, and everything is as it was at the beginning. However, the experience has brought about changes. They are invited to 'breathe and anchor' these changes to see how they operate within each individual.
The Hug Process
1
Both stand back-to-back, making contact, with their eyes closed, inviting each other's presence and their own presence through what they can feel. They separate once more and breathe in these sensations.
Next, a process begins in which each person will take off one random piece of clothing from the other, without turning around or looking... making the game somewhat 'challenging.'
The other person can assist if a piece of clothing proves difficult, but should ideally remain in a state of stillness and relaxation. Always with their backs turned and eyes closed.
2
Once both are naked, they are invited to come together back-to-back once more and become aware of each other's forms. The exercise of supporting each other and holding each other is also performed. This is to provide security and demonstrate that we can trust each other.
Then, they are invited to recognize each other's bodies with their hands, always with their backs turned, in a very subtle manner.
From there, the sequences of hugs begin, with alternating roles of being the total giver or total receiver of hugs. Various types of hugs are performed.
3
Both participants stand face to face, always with their eyes closed. The guide suggests that one of them solely receives (total receiver) while the other solely gives (total giver) hugs.
Then, they return to their starting positions. The process repeats with hugs from behind. Different types of hugs can be explored based on the instructions. All variations are welcome.
Finally, they end up facing each other again, but this time: Man and Woman EMBRACE each other in whichever way they desire (this often leads to a silent and harmonious dance).
Hug Therapy allows us to reach a state of profound self-connection through self-acceptance. It involves not only the generosity of 'giving' but also that of 'receiving.' In this practice, we can discover ourselves through others. We can read our essence through the mold. We can uncover our shape by seeing how it fits into the shape of another. It allows us to mirror ourselves both in the physical and emotional aspects.
Respect is fundamental because we are working with others and with ourselves. Various instructions and creative proposals can be incorporated based on what we want to work on or the stimuli and emotions we wish to bring to the surface during the process.
